Saturday will cover the notions of Spirits, Shen, Jingshen and more in early Daoist texts and medical literature, as the basis of their meaning in medicine.

Sunday morning Elisabeth will explain the symbolism embroided on one of the Mahuangdui tombs funerary banners. This provides fascinating insights into ideas of life and death, Yin, Yang, Hun and Po, and the functions they serve in life and death, as well as spirits and various animal symbols.

Sunday afternoon will be detail on the etymology and uses of qi, blood, yin yang.

Elisabeth has written full length books on these topics. Some practitioners ask if this sort of presentation will be clinically useful, as the emphasis will not be on points and herbs. Learning about the world view of early Chinese medicine, as elaborated in central terms and concepts, is fundamental to understanding qi medicine. Through broadening our understanding of what is meant by Shen, Qi, Jing or the Spirits we begin to see them in clinical presentations and refine our ability to diagnose and treat.

Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallee

Is an internationally recognized author and scholar in the field of the Chinese medical classics. Beginning in 1976, she collaborated with scholars Fr. Larre and Dr. Jean Schatz on publications on Chinese philosophy and classical Chinese medical texts. Texts published in English include Survey of Chinese Traditional Medicine and Rooted in Spirit, as well as transcripts of her lectures given in London, including: The Secret Treatise of the Spiritual Orchid (Suwen, ch. 8); The Eight Extraordinary Meridians; The Seven Emotions; Essence, Spirit, Blood and Qi ; The Extraordinary Fu; A study of Qi; Yin Yang in Classical Texts; Pregnancy & Gestation; Wu Xing, the Five Elements in Chinese Classical Texts.

Ms. Rochat de la Vallee has lectured in France, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, England, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Netherland, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States, on ancient Chinese philosophy (especially on the Taoist texts: Zhuangzi, Laozi, Huainanzi) and on classical Chinese medicine (Huangdi Neijing).
